Supported Independent Living (SIL) in Brisbane

Superior Quality Care is an NDIS-registered provider of Supported Independent Living (SIL) in Brisbane, Ipswich and nearby areas, based in Redbank Plains. We support people with disability to live in a safe, comfortable home with the right level of help each day, while building the skills and confidence to do more for themselves. ABN: 98642221207.

Every person we support is different. Your SIL support is shaped around your goals, routines and preferences, and the funding approved in your NDIS plan. Whether you are moving out of the family home, changing providers, or helping someone you care about find the right home, our team will guide you through each step in plain language.

What Is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS funding for the support workers who help a participant with daily tasks in their home. It can include help with personal care, meals, household tasks, medication and building everyday skills. SIL is part of NDIS Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life).

SIL pays for support, not for the home itself. It does not cover rent, groceries or utility bills. Most people receiving SIL live in a shared home with a small number of housemates, though individual arrangements may be possible. The NDIS approves SIL funding based on a person's assessed support needs, so the amount and type of support is different for everyone.

SIL is also different from Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). SIL is the support. SDA is specially designed housing. You can receive SIL without SDA, and some people have both.

Household Tasks and Skill Building

Support workers help with cleaning, laundry and keeping your home organised. Wherever possible we do tasks with you rather than for you, so you build real skills. This can include cooking, budgeting, using technology and managing routines. Learn more about our household tasks support and daily living skills programs.

Community Access and Transport

Independence also means being part of your community. We support you to attend appointments, go shopping, join social activities and try new things. See our community participation support and travel and transport assistance.

Overnight Support (Active and Inactive)

Some people need support during the night. Active overnight support means a worker is awake and helping you. Inactive overnight support means a worker is on site and available if you need help, and can usually rest between calls. The type of overnight support you receive depends on your needs and your approved NDIS funding.

Who Is Supported Independent Living For?

SIL is generally for NDIS participants who need regular support with daily tasks and have SIL funding included in their plan, or who may be eligible to request it. It may suit you if you:

  • Need regular help during the day and/or night with personal care or daily tasks
  • Are moving out of the family home or leaving other accommodation
  • Live with an intellectual, cognitive, physical or psychosocial disability
  • Want to live in a shared home with the right level of support
  • Need health and safety support because of a medical condition

Not Sure SIL Is Right? Other Support Options

SIL is not the right fit for everyone. Other options in the NDIS include:

  • In-home support: daily support while you continue living in your own home or with family
  • Individualised Living Options (ILO): a flexible home and support arrangement designed around you
  • Short Term Accommodation (STA): planned short stays away from home
  • Medium Term Accommodation (MTA): temporary housing while waiting for a long-term home

Our team can talk these through with you and your support coordinator. If you are planning a big change, our life stage transition support can help too.

How Is SIL Funded Under the NDIS?

SIL is funded through the Core Supports budget, under Assistance with Daily Life. The funding pays for support workers in your home. It does not pay for rent, food or utilities, which participants usually cover themselves.

Because SIL is based on individual needs, funding differs from person to person. It can cover a few hours of support each day, or round-the-clock support including overnight care.

SIL Quote and Roster of Care

To request SIL funding, the NDIS looks at evidence about your support needs. This often includes a Home and Living report and a SIL quote from a provider. The quote is built from a roster of care, which shows when support workers are needed in the home across a week and how many are needed at each time.

Our team can help prepare the information needed for your quote and work alongside your support coordinator and allied health providers. We cannot guarantee approval, because the final decision is made by the NDIS.
